In organic chemistry a vinyl halide is a compound with the formula ch 2 chx x halide the term vinyl is often used to describe any alkenyl group. The reaction occurs instantaneously with tertiary alkyl or benzyl bromides and within five minutes or so with primary and secondary bromides. The reactivities of aryl halides such as the halobenzenes are exceedingly low toward nucleophilic reagents that normally effect displacements with alkyl halides and activated aryl halides.
